The Latest Nursery & Reception Learning Update!

The children have had a wonderful start to the year, settling in beautifully and impressing their teachers with all they can do. They are eager to share their skills and talents, confidently showing what they enjoy, from exploring creative activities to engaging in imaginative play. It’s been a joy to see them growing more independent and excited about learning every day!
This term, our topic is ‘I am Special’, where we will be celebrating the unique qualities that make each child in our school community one of a kind. Through fun and engaging activities, the children will explore what makes them special, from their talents and interests to their individual strengths and personalities. This topic is designed to boost self-esteem, promote positive thinking, and help children appreciate both themselves and the diversity of others around them. We’re excited to see the children grow in confidence as they discover what makes them truly special!
In Literacy this term, we will be focusing on developing phonics skills by learning a new letter sound each day. Each week, we will read a new book related to our topic ‘I am Special’. The children will engage with these stories by making predictions, retelling the tales, role-playing, and sharing their opinions. We’ll also explore new vocabulary from the books, encouraging the children to use these new words independently in their conversations and writing. This approach will help build their reading comprehension, language development, and confidence in expressing themselves.
In Maths this term, we will be exploring a range of key concepts to build foundational skills. The children will learn how to count by finding the total number of objects, sounds, or actions in a set. We’ll also delve into time, understanding how it is measured in days, weeks, months, years, and seasons. Our topic on patterns will help students identify and create designs that repeat. They’ll practice how to sort by grouping objects based on their characteristics and compare by looking for similarities and differences. Finally, we’ll explore repetition, learning how things happen again and again. These concepts will support their problem-solving and logical thinking skills.
This half term in Understanding the World, we are exploring important concepts about the world around us. The children will learn about family, understanding the special people we are related to, and explore what is natural, focusing on things that come from nature. We’ll discuss health, highlighting the importance of physical, social, and mental wellbeing. As we learn about what it means to be human, the children will also discover more about their country, including its flag. We’ll study the changing seasons, especially as we move through Autumn, and introduce the idea of a map, showing how the Earth’s surface is represented. This topic will help students develop a broader understanding of the world they live in.
